Along with this time of year come colds and flu! When you come down with a virus, you not only don’t feel on your A game, but it also means that you probably neglect your normal self-care routine.

When I don’t practice self-love, I feel down about myself. After spending the last few days nursing a bad cold, I realized that being ill doesn’t mean you should skip pampering yourself. Here are a few ways that helped me feel beautiful while I was battling those nasty bugs!

Light some candles

I spent days cooped up in my bed surrounded by heaps of tissues and cough drop wrappers. It wasn’t long before my room started to feel like the sick room, filled with germs and bad vibes. Lighting a single candle made all the difference. It felt like I created a zen vibe in my room and the scent lifted my spirits. The same effect can be achieved with sage or palo santo, however, a candle requires less effort when you don’t have much energy.

Take a bubble bath

A soothing bubbling bath with eucalyptus oil is calming and cleansing. There’s something about taking a bath that helps you to slow down and reconnect with your being. I add eucalyptus oil to open my sinuses and help to breathe easier.

Neti pot

In Ayurveda it’s important to cleanse the sensory channels and a neti pot is a great way to do that. An added bonus is that Neti pots help to relieve congestion when you have a cold. I also use steam to open my sinuses (also great for skin FYI). You don’t need a fancy tool to do this. Simply fill your sink with hot water and then place a towel over your head and inhale the steam. I add a couple drops of essential oils for a soothing effect.

Face mask

Finally, if you have the energy, apply a facemask. There’s nothing quite like taking 30 minutes out of your day to hydrate and relax. I personally love Korean Sheet Masks as they’re easy and not a mess. Another great way to relax is with Space Eye Masks. They’re self-heating and all you have to do is put them on like eye shades and then let all your worries melt away.

These are just some of the ways to practice self-love while you’re under the weather. Of course, a feel-good movie, simple stretches and cuddling with a puppy also help to feel less low. Whatever it is, I hope you feel better soon and back to normal in no time!
