Summer Skincare Routine
Posted on August 13th, 2018
Skin care is an important daily ritual. For me, it’s a time to practice self-love, turn inward, and feel connected to my body. Below is my summer skincare routine along with the products I’m currently using. Please be aware that my skin is dry/sensitive so the products I use are targeted towards those issues.
In the morning, I wash my face with cold water followed by using Burts Bee’s Intense Hydration Cream Cleanser. This gets rid of any of the bacteria that may have gotten on my face from my pillowcase (I wash my pillowcase weekly but oils from your hair can also get on your skin when you toss in your sleep).
Next step I use a Japanese hydrating toner. Toners target different areas and not all are created equal so it’s worth doing some research to find the best one for you (btw I had a fear of toners for years post high school after I fell into the trap of using the drugstore kind that have astringents and COMPLETELY dry your skin out.) Basically I get it if you’re hesitant to bring toners back into your routine. Essentially the toner’s job is to dampen your skin and balance out your PH levels levels. I personally love it.
Then I apply a few drops of serum for hydration. Right now I’m really digging Tumerica Facial Serum, which is rich in antioxidants and just leaves my skin feeling super hydrated. Once I’ve spent a little time massaging the serum in, I apply sunscreen (even on cloudy days). My normal go to is Eucerin Moisturizing Face Lotion Sunscreen, but recently I ran out and have been using Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer. I honestly love both but might stick with the Neutrogena one only because it has a higher SPF.
In my bag I always carry Trader Joe’s Rose Water Facial Toner. It’s perfect for whenever I need a little spritz of hydration on the go. In addition the scent is suuuuppppperr zeeeen.
For my evening routine, I massage my face with almond oil to get rid of makeup, dirt, sunscreen, etc. Once I’ve taken a few moments to really cleanse my skin (make sure you also clean your neck), I get a clean warm washcloth and gently apply it to my neck and face to remove the oil. After I’ve completed that step, I massage Burts Bee’s hydrating cleanser onto my skin. Move in circular upward motions to remove any dirt or grime that the oil might not have eliminated.
Following the cleanse, I pat (never rub) my face dry and apply the Japanese toner. I also like to use a few drops of the Turmerica oil post-toner for even more hydration. Then I use a a few drops of The Ordinary’s Retinol 0.5% in Squalane on my face and neck (if you use retinol you need to be very careful about sun exposure and always wear sunscreen). I like this brand because it’s effective and affordable.
Once that has been completed, I massage my face for about five minutes with almond oil. If my skin is feeling puffy, I use a jade or rose quartz roller to stimulate circulation. (I do think it’s worth investing in a more expensive roller, which is something I plan to do as soon as my current roller breaks). I really take time to massage the oil and let all the good stuff absorb into my skin. I finish my routine using Boots gentle eye cream, which I gently tab around the eyes (never rub as the skin around the eyes is the most delicate). To seal this all in I use a thicker Eucerin Sensitive Anti Wrinkle Cream. I personally love the texture and it leaves my skin feeling really nourished.
It’s important that about twice a week you use a scrub to get rid of any dull skin so that your serums can penetrate the skin and more effective. I use Burt’s Bees Peach and Willow Bark Deep Pore Scrub, which I personally love and highly recommend.
I’d also like to add that I just purchased Missha Near Skin Simple Therapy Essence Lotion (for extra hydration), Alpha Arbutin and Kojic Acid Serum (for brightening any dark spots), Lululun Moisture Sheet Masks (also to seal in extra hydration). I’ll write a review on these products as soon as they arrive!
And voila that’s my summer skincare routine!
Make your day be filled with good vibes.
